Description
We were hired by the general contractor multiple times during the course of this project.
First, we were tasked with testing a W12 beam in a 50’ elevator that was going to support a Schindler freight elevator. The beam was anchored into the concrete with post installed 1” anchor bolts with Dewalt AC100. Due to the life safety of the application the engineers and owner determined that they wanted the beam pull tested as a system to 15,000 pounds per side. This was particularly challenging because there is no conventional way to connect to an overhead beam to do a pull test. Every other company that the client requested a proposal from said that the beam would need to removed and the anchors tested individually. The client did not have the time or personnel to do this. Another complexity to the testing was that the testing agency would need to provide their own articulating boom lift per the rules of the job site. We designed a high load clamp bracket that we were able to use to successfully pull test each side of the beam. We were able to be in compliance with the job sites rules and provided our own JLG 450AJ boom lift. Our experienced master technician was able to drive the boom lift in the limited spaces of the job site. The testing was done in accordance with NYC Department of Buildings bulletin 2016-005.
Second, we were tasked with pull testing the wedge anchors for the 10th floor outdoor deck guard rails. These were of particular concern for the engineer and owner because the parapet wall was hollow block. We successfully did the pull testing accordance with the NYC Department of Buildings bulletin 2016-005.
